“Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!”
~Coleridge, “Kubla Khan”
“The poem was over.
The poet had performed.”
~Heaney, trans. Beowulf
Floyd Jamboree
He had again lost control of one leg | slapped his
thigh, stomped his flat foot and took off | heel,
toe, heel, toe | sweeping up like a tornado anyone he could find.
May have died and resurrected | here | on this floor
buried with his fern and feather hat | and bedroom slippers
has come back to tell us all | to teach us all
to dance | Never needed to learn | himself | master of the art
himself. Eternal motion of the spheres brought life to his
eyes | more full than imagination | and the night
must end | must ply plied floorboards and place our bard
back again | until the next Friday | when new folk come and
he greets them at the door: You are going to have the time of your life.
